2009/2010 ANNUAL REPORT: |
This Section supported pro bono activities by organizing
several "Wills for Heroes" clinics in which its volunteer
attorneys provided basic estate planning services to dedicated
police and fi refi ghters. It provided basic legal information
to Maryland residents during the "People's Law Day"
at Bowie State University and support for the Maryland
State Foreclosure Project. This Section also continued its
strong tradition of public service through its "One Bar One
Community" program, donating time at Our Daily Bread in
Baltimore; working with Habitat for Humanity; donating
to Toys for Tots; and collecting books to build a children's
law library. It raised thousands of charity dollars with its
participation in the Maryland State Police's 14th Annual Polar
Bear Plunge, benefi ting the Special Olympics; the Homeless
Persons Representation Project during the 19th Annual MSBA
Charity Event; and "Lighting the Night" for the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society. The Section also hosted monthly happy
hours throughout the state, at times in conjunction with other
professional organizations, to introduce young lawyers to the
Section as well as the benefi ts of MSBA membership. |

WE THE JURY
The YLS is proud to announce its participation in the WE THE JURY Program developed by the Texas Young Lawyer’s and adopted last year by the ABA Young Lawyer’s Division. WE THE JURY is an educational program designed for high school students to educate them on the history and importance of the jury system. Lawyers come into the classroom to conduct a mock voir dire and then guide the students through mock jury service by using videos provided by the ABA.
We need volunteers willing to give up a few hours to go into classrooms, and we encourage all interested parties to contact us, so that we can place you with a school in your jurisdiction. We’ll give you everything you need, so you won’t really need to prepare. It’s very low impact, and a lot of fun. To sign up or for further information, contact Kendall Butterworth, kendall.butterworth@bellsouth.com or (404) 249-3388. For more information about the program, see http://www.abanet.org/yld/wethejury/home.html
